Recently, at the Institute of Strategic and Regional Studies under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan (ISRS), the Deputy Director, Akramjon Nematov, met with Nick Megoran, a leading British expert on Central Asia and a professor at Newcastle University.
During the meeting, the professor presented his monograph, "What Happens When Borders Reopen?", based on his fieldwork in the Fergana Valley states. The key findings of the research paper are that Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev's good-neighborliness policy has significantly strengthened regional cooperation in Central Asia, facilitating trade, tourism, and labor migration. According to him, ordinary citizens living in border areas have benefited from the opening of borders, improved transport links, and improved water management.
The expert particularly noted the historic significance of the signing of the Treaty on the Junction Point of State Borders and the Khujand Declaration on Eternal Friendship between Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The British scholar also emphasized the importance of the Fergana Peace Forum, held in October of this year, in strengthening trust and good-neighborliness in the Fergana Valley. He noted that thanks to the joint efforts of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan, the Fergana Valley, previously perceived as a "conflict zone," is now being transformed into a fulcrum and a space of opportunity for all of Central Asia.
