One of such areas in Surkhandarya region is pomegranate growing. Sherabad pomegranates are famous for their large fruits, taste and yield. They are popular abroad as well, which is a great opportunity for entrepreneurs and an important source of income for the local population. 33 out of 48 mahallas in the district specialize in pomegranate growing.
One of such pomegranate orchards was created by LLC Sardorbek Sultanbek in “Buston” mahalla of the district.
The President got acquainted with the orchard.
More than 30 thousand pomegranate trees have been planted here on 43 hectares. One “Qozoqi” pomegranate can weigh almost 1 kilogram. This year it is planned to harvest over a thousand tons of fruits.
“The transition period is a time of competition. We need to change our lives, fight for our place in the world market, and implement profitable projects. Our main goal is to increase the income of families. A family that strives to work and achieve results will live in prosperity, take care of their health and give a good education to their children. And educated children will find their way in the future”, the President said.
A conversation was held with researchers of Termez branch of Tashkent State Agrarian University.
“We have traditions of pomegranate growing, but there are no science, no books, laboratories. The pomegranate is grown in an old-fashioned way. Not everyone knows how to protect plants from disease. The main thing is to create the best varieties. Then these varieties must be brought to the population”, said Shavkat Mirziyoyev.
The President gave instructions on the organization in Surkhandarya of an institute for the innovative development of agriculture, the expansion of cultivation, in addition to pomegranates, lemons and persimmons.
The Head of the state also visited Kattabog district mahalla. The President met with Abdurakhmon Karimov’s family, who are engaged in pomegranate-growing, and got acquainted with the living conditions of the population and the state of use of household plots. A sincere conversation took place with residents of the mahalla and aksakals.
It was noted that more than 5 thousand people are engaged in pomegranate growing in Sherabad district. Pomegranate gardens bring significant income.
